Rain cancels Pomona's Friday qualifying activities.
POMONA, Ca. (Nov. 8) - Although persistent rain forced NHRA officials to cancel all qualifying activities on Friday for the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway, newly crowned NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon will be gearing up to defend his title in the Top Fuel Shootout on Saturday in hopes of taking his third victory in the non-points event.
Based on qualifying points accumulated all year, Dixon will roar from his No. 2 seed in the lineup to match up with Doug Herbert in his first round of eliminations. With an opportunity of claiming a $100,000 grand prize in this specialty Top Fuel race, the Miller Lite Snake Racing team will be debuting a one-of-a-kind Snake Racing paint scheme to commemorate Don Prudhomme's 40th Anniversary in the sport of NHRA drag racing.
"It's a great looking car," said Dixon, who won the event in his rookie season in 1995 and again last year. "We'll go in there and see how we do on Saturday. We know we have only one lap under our belt going into tomorrow's race, but we know all eight drivers in the 'Shootout' want to win. Before we can think about Sunday's race, we'll give it our best on Saturday and hopefully come out a winner."
Dixon and the Dick LaHaie-led Miller Lite Team is presently qualified presently in the No. 2 position for Sunday's Auto Club NHRA Finals with a time of 4.576 seconds along with top speed, so far, in the meet of 324. 98 mph.
The first round of the Top Fuel Shootout will start at 12:15 p.m. PT with ESPN 2 carrying the coverage of the race starting at 10:00 p.m. ET Saturday, Nov. 9.
