LAS VEGAS -- Shields Racing is set to test its Federal Mogul Top Alcohol Dragster at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this Friday, in preparation for national competition. "This year has been great, but we've had our share of problems," said Duane Shields, driver and owner of the Shields Racing dragster. "In the last two semifinal rounds, the engine had a malfunction, a pushrod broke and a blower popped. We just want to double check everything and try to make sure we get rid of our gremlins." Despite the malfunctions, Shields has a win and two semifinals in his three events this season. "We've had a few engine problems, but the car has performed excellent," Shields said. "We have a brand-new 2000 Brad Hadman Chassis this season." Shields is currently third in points on the NHRA Division 6 circuit after three events. Shields trails divisional points leader Mark Hentgens, who has completed four events this season, by 49 points. Shields, who began racing Federal Mogul Dragsters in 1997, has steadily improved his season point totals each year, finishing the 1997 season 13th in points, 10th in 1998 and fifth in 1999. After testing at The Strip this Friday, Shields will compete at the Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals in Seattle, Wash., July 28-30. Shields Racing will test at The Strip this weekend as part of Friday Night Drags. The evening will host High School and Import E.T. bracket racing, a test-n-tune open to the public and a Gambler Elimination. Gates are set to open at 5 p.m.
