Howard scores second-straight final round finish

ENNIS, Texas - Defending two-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Shelly Howard scored her second straight final round appearance by taking a runner-up finish during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas. Howard, who won her last event in Denver, used consistent 5.40's to make it to the finals where she was defeated by Randy Meyer.

Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned injected-nitro dragster second in the field with a 5.440 second pass at 253.09 mph. In round one, she defeated Division 4 rival Lee Callaway with a 5.504 at 256.60 mph, and then ran a 5.457 at 260.01 mph to defeat Nick Copeland. In the finals, engine problems lead to an easy win for Randy Meyer.

"We had a pretty good weekend," said Howard. "Tom is really getting a handle on this A/Fuel combination, and we were able to make it down the track almost every run this weekend, and had it not been for our problem in the final, hopefully it would have been every run."

The next race for the Howard Racing team will be the next stop on the Division 4 Lucas Oil Series in Baton Rouge, La., August 13-14.
