Howard takes first win of the year on 'The Mountain'
MORRISON, Colo. - Defending two-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Shelly Howard took her first win of the 2004 season during this past weekend's Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. The win moves her into second behind Ashley Force in Division 4 standings.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., who made the switch back to her Tom Conway tuned, championship-winning, blown car for the high altitude race, qualified second with a 5.743 second time at 247.66 mph. In round one, she ran a 5.767 at 247.16 mph to defeat Gerald Gossman, and then took out a red-lighting Larry Traugott with a 5.716 at 246.71 mph.
In the final, Howard defeated a red-lighting Brent DuCray with a 5.665 second elapsed time at 248.52 mph.
"We had a little luck on our side with the red-lights, but Tom and the crew had the car running very strong," said Howard. "After the year we've had so far, we could use a little luck. We're very pleased with the win, and it just goes to show that you just can't give up, no matter how bad you start the year off."
"We always like running Denver," continued Howard. "It's a very nice facility, and I have some family and friends up there. It was also nice getting back into the blown car, I've always enjoyed driving it."
Howard plans to switch back to her Conway tuned injected-nitro entry for most of the year, but hasn't ruled out bringing the blown car out for select events.
"We're going to go back to work on the A/Fuel program," explained Howard. "Tom wants to get more runs with the combo. That's not to say if the conditions for a particular event will favor a blown car, we won't bring it back out. We are keeping that car; it's not for sale."
The next event for Shelly Howard Racing will be the rescheduled Division 4 LODRS event at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas, July 30-31.
