Howard nets quarterfinal finish in Columbus

KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard reached the quarterfinals of this past weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio.

Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster eighth in the field with a 5.547 second pass at 254.66 mph. In round one, she defeated Keith Stark with a 5.469 at 257.38. Howard's fortunes turned in round two, however. A starting line distraction was enough for Jeff Bohr to gain enough of a holeshot to hold off her 5.543 at 253.90 mph with his own 5.567 at 252.71 mph. After the outing Howard currently sits seventh in national points.

"I just messed up on the line," said Howard. "I'm not trying to make any excuses. I didn't have the rpm's where I wanted them, and I looked down at the tach for just a second, and that's when the light went green, so obviously I was late. I hate the fact that it happened, but it did, and we just have to move on and do better at the next race."

The next event for the Howard Racing Team will be this weekend's Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. Howard has won two of her three national events on 'The Mountain' in Denver.
