Howard looking to continue learning curve in Columbus
KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio - Defending two-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Shelly Howard will be entering her second race with her new injected-nitro dragster at this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio. Howard and her team lead by former World Champion Tom Conway made the semifinals in the debut of her A/Fuel car, and hope to continue their early success with the machine.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., cites their initial success in Topeka was a pleasant surprise. The team realizes that level of performance right out of the box with a new combination will be tough to maintain, but is certainly not unattainable after running a 5.41 best in Topeka.
"We're real happy with the way the car has ran," said Howard. "It was a pleasant surprise considering the way this year has went for us, but when you think about how long our tuner Tom Conway has been around, it really isn't that surprising, and we're lucky to have him. With as much work and change as it has been switching to this new combo, I am really proud of my team lead by Joe Monden for adapting to the change and giving me a competitive car to drive. I just hope I can continue to do my job and not let everyone down."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, and one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations will begin Saturday evening, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
