Howard scores big win at No Problem
BELLE ROSE, La. - With her back against the wall, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard pulled off a clutch win at this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., just northwest of New Orleans. The win moves her within two points of current points leader Lee Callaway going into their final race in Noble, Okla., in three weeks.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., displayed a backbreaking consistency reminiscent of her 2001 Division 4 Championship run to win the event. Howard qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster third in the field with a 5.537 second time at 252.43 mph. In round one, she defeated James Thompson with a 5.561 at 252.57, and then defeated a tire-smoking Jason Cannon in the semifinals with a 5.588 at 252.80 mph.
In the final, Howard would square off with drag race legend, Gene Snow. With Snow having an outside chance at the Division Championship with a win, and Howard needing to close the gap on Callaway, the stage was set for a high stakes race in front of the large No Problem Raceway crowd. The pair gave the crowd their money's worth, with Howard taking the win with a 5.505 at 254.57 mph to Snow's 5.594 at 232.23 mph.
"We're very happy to get the win and we're dedicating it to Rick Meyer," said Howard. "This is the first race we've won since Rick passed away, and as much time as we spent with Rick, he was like family. So it was only fitting to dedicate this one to him. He was part of our team when we won the championship back in 2001, so hopefully we can win one for him again this year."
"We were very fortunate to get the win; it was a tough field," added Howard. "We have a new associate sponsor, Therapy Concepts, and it's good to get in the winner's circle for them and the rest of our sponsors, InsideTopAlcohol.com, Valvoline, NGK, St. Moritz Machine, Broken Arrow Powder Coating and Tulsa Sheetmetal. Hopefully we can continue that success at Noble. That's another race. Essentially the score will be zero to zero going into Noble. It certainly will be a tough race again."
The next stop for the team will be the CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago, Sept. 25-28. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
