Howard hoping to play off of strong 2002 finish this season.
TULSA, Okla. - At the beginning of last season, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard was looking at a season full of question marks. The team had to start from scratch with a new car after crashing her proven championship winning car in 2001. The team struggled for most of the first half of the year, but stayed focused, and rebounded to have a very strong second half of the year, finishing eighth nationally. Now having a handle on her new car, Howard is excited about getting the 2003 season under way.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., cites that there will be nothing new for 2003, just a continuation from last year.
"We really struggled during the beginning of last year with the new car," said Howard. "The new car took a totally new combination; the old combination wouldn't work. I never lost faith in my tuner Tom Conway, however. We stuck with it, dug in, and the car started to come around towards the last half of last year. This year we just want to continue from the end of last year. There is nothing new with our team for this year. It's the same outlook, same gameplan as always - we'll take it one race at a time and one run at a time. We just hope to get off to a good start this year in Houston, and go from there."
In keeping with continuing from last season, Howard is happy to have associate sponsors Valvoline, NGK, InsideTopAlcohol.com, St. Moritz Machine and Broken Arrow Powder Coating back on board for the 2003 season.
"We are very pleased to have all of our associate sponsors back on board for 2003," stated Howard. "I don't think people realize how important associate sponsors are to a race team. They may not be giving us multimillion dollar deals, but without their support, it would be very difficult to make racing on this level a reality. We just hope to do our best for Valvoline, NGK, InsideTopAlcohol.com, St. Moritz Machine and Broken Arrow Powder Coating this year."
