KURT JOHNSON NAMED DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT O'REILLY RACEWAY PARK AT INDIANAPOLIS

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 27, 2010) CLERMONT, Ind. -- NHRA officials announced today that Kurt Johnson has been named director of racing operations for O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, effective immediately.

In his new position he will manage the racing operations of the drag strip, oval, and road course at the legendary multipurpose motorsports facility. He will also be responsible for the scheduling of events, track rentals, and working closely with promoters, race participants and sanctioning bodies including NASCAR. He will also be directly involved in the track maintenance, safety, security, and event staff.

"Kurt has a broad range of experience including serving as director of operations for Don Schumacher Racing, plant manager, logistics manager, and also was a business owner that involved contract marketing and sponsorship procurement for motorsports," said Peter Clifford, executive vice president and general manager, NHRA. "In addition, he has a strong background in safety and emergency operations."

Johnson has already begun some duties in his new position and has been actively involved in the installation of a new timing and scoring system for the championship dragstrip, which will host the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, the world's most prestigious drag race, Sept. 1-6.

Johnson joined NHRA in August, 2008 and before taking on his new role, was responsible for managing the day-to-day marketing and operational functions at all NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of this new opportunity at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis," Johnson said. "This facility continues to be one of the busiest racing venues in the country and we are committed to ensuring a quality experience for all those who race here."

A native of Longmont, Colo. and a former Marine, Johnson currently resides in Brownsburg, Ind.

One of five drag racing facilities owned and operated by the National Hot Rod Association, O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis was built in 1960 and has presented organized racing events since 1961. From March through October, the facility hosts more than 120 dates of racing on three tracks, a quarter-mile drag strip, a .686-mile paved oval and a 2.5-mile road course. Home to drag racing's biggest event, the NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day weekend, the drag strip runs more than 50 days of point-to-point action, from national events to street legal community programs. The oval track draws racing's biggest events, including annual visits from the NASCAR Nationwide, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and annual USAC races. The road course provides a home for several racing sanctions, while providing an ideal resource for driving schools, corporate outings and open-road tests for professional drivers.
