Park Ridge, Ill. (July 24): After going to his seventh final round appearance in the 12 races of the 2000 NHRA Winston Championship Drag Racing season, Tony Schumacher and his Exide Batteries teammates go to the Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals at Seattle International Raceway trailing Gary Scelzi by only 39 points for the Top Fuel points lead.
Schumacher's Exide dragster has been a model of consistency this year because of the wizardry of crew chief, Dan Olson and a crew that seems to get stronger with each race. In seven races this year, Olson's tune-up has produced a first round e.t. that was quicker than Schumacher's qualifying e.t., showing the preparation that the Exide team puts into their raceday setup.
"It's amazing to think that my dad put this team together less than two years ago," said Schumacher, "and this crew has been together less than that."
"It is one of those rare situations where everyone has their particular strength and all the guys look out for each other like a family."
As the season enters the second half, each race is more critical as Schumacher defends his 1999 Top Fuel championship and tries to retake the points lead. "I know we say it a lot," said Schumacher, "but you can't win the championship without going rounds."
"It would be nice to have won more races, but we will take going to the finals just the same."
In last year's Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals, Schumacher was defeated by the event winner, Joe Amato, in the second round of eliminations. Before leaving for the Seattle area race, Schumacher will appear on ESPN's RPM2Night on Wednesday evening, July 26.
