SCHUMACHER CAPTURES FIFTH POSITION

SEATTLE, Wash., July 9, 2010 - Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher drove the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster into fifth position following today's first two rounds of qualifying for the 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals here at Pacific Raceways.

"We were fastest during the hottest session," said the reigning and seven-time NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel Champion about the first round. "Then we made some changes to deal with what we believe will be cooler race conditions.

"My U.S. Army NHRA Racing crew gave me a car that produced two solid runs today, which is, of course, a good thing. But our mission is to win on Sunday, so we will continue to make adjustments with that goal in mind during tomorrow's two runs."

Schumacher was the lone Top Fuel car with a sub-four-second lap in the first round, topping the session with a 3.979-second run at 299.93 miles per hour. He improved on both figures later in the day, running the 1,000-foot course in 3.959 seconds at 302.75 mph.

"Mike (crew chief Green) will go over the data and we'll get back at it Saturday," said the Chicago-area native. "Again, our goal is to win Sunday and continue working towards the championship; and this race has been an important one during the last six seasons (each of which ending with Schumacher as world champion)."

Winning here since the championship run began in 2004 has been a habit for Schumacher, who has captured four of the last six NHRA Northwest Nationals (finishing second in the other two races)

Antron Brown qualified his Matco Tools/U.S. Army car right behind teammate Schumacher with a 3.964-second run at 303.03 mph.
