TOMMY JOHNSON JR. HEADED FOR FAMILIAR TERRITORY
- Earned 1st Professional Win in Seattle -
SEATTLE (July 18, 2007) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and SKOAL Racing are looking to capitalize on familiar ground for the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals in Seattle this weekend. Their Chevrolet Impala has been running very well as of late, and the crew is now trying to piece it all together as they head into the homestretch of six consecutive weeks of NHRA events.
While the grueling stretch of consecutive races may have taken its toll on other teams, Johnson feels his SKOAL Racing Team is up to the challenge. "Even though this is week five of six of consecutive races, I feel our team is one of the stronger ones that can rise to the occasion when others are worn out from this hard tour."
Seattle brings back fond memories for him as it was the site of his first career victory in 1993 when he was racing top fuel. Now, Johnson hopes to catch lightning a second time in the Pacific Northwest and get himself into position for the countdown to the championship.
Last week, Johnson's Impala car threw a rod out in the first round Sunday in Denver and was bested by Jack Beckman. Johnson ran passes of 5.057 and 5.013 on his last pass to make the show on Sunday, qualifying in 15th place.
Last year in Seattle, he qualified ninth and was beaten by number eight qualifier Tony Pedregon. Whit Bazemore was the eventual event winner.
Johnson currently sits 10th in points standing with four races to go until the cutoff of the top eight drivers in the countdown to the championship after Reading, PA (Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals--August 16-19).
