KENT, Wash. (July 23, 2004) 0x2022 Tommy Johnson Jr. and his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo raced to the No. 15 qualifying position Friday at Pacific Raceways after two of four scheduled qualifying attempts at the Washington facility.

On his first qualifying effort of the weekend under the newly implemented 85-pecent nitromethane rule, Johnson used a Mike Green tune-up to race to a run of 5.233 seconds at 284.39 mph to grab the No. 6 qualifying position. Later in the evening, Johnson's Skoal Racing flopper overpowered the blistering Pacific Raceways quarter mile and Johnson finished the day in the No. 15 spot.

"We're still learning with the 85-percent deal," Johnson said. "A lot of guys improved, but some didn't. I think the weather conditions will be the same on Saturday, hot. So, we should be able to go out in the early session and run a low 5.0."

Johnson and the Skoal Racing blue crew look to move up the Funny Car order when nitro qualifying continues with sessions at noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday at Pacific Raceways, where Johnson earned his first career NHRA victory in 1993.
