Toliver Wins First Round of 2001 Season

KENT, Wash. (July 29, 2001) - This time last year at Seattle International Raceway, Jerry Toliver was the leader in the championship points race in the Funny Car field. This year, Toliver, driver of the World Wrestling Federation Pontiac Firebird, earned his first round win of the season at the Prolong Northwest Nationals with an elapsed time of 4.949-seconds at 304.39 mph to defeat Tommy Johnson, Jr. with an elapsed time of 5.068-seconds at 270.97 mph.

"Finally, we have that monkey off our backs," said Toliver of his first final elimination round win. "We needed that. These guys have worked very hard all year and they definitely deserve that round win."

"On that first run the front tires were hiked up in the air at the 330-foot mark and the car shook a little bit," Toliver continued. "When it hooked back up to the track it really took off. This is one great hot rod."

In the second round of eliminations, Toliver faced current points leader, John Force. Toliver ran an elapsed time of 13.576-seconds at 75.08 mph against Force's 5.012-seconds at 298.47 mph.

"I want to say again how proud I am of this team," Toliver said. "We went down to a one car team before Pomona to get this racing program turned around. We have made tremendous progress the last couple events. It won't happen overnight but it will happen."
