KENT, Wash. (July 24, 2003) - Scotty Cannon, driver of the Oakley Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing, is fresh from an outstanding first-round victory at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, where he defeated the No. 1 Funny Car points leader Tony Pedregon. He's looking to keep up that momentum at Pacific Raceways this weekend for the 14th round of 23 of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

"We just went up there in the first round and made sure we didn't beat ourselves," says the popular Mohawk-wearing racer from Lyman, S.C., "and that's what happened. It was up to Pedregon to either beat us or beat himself. He beat himself and we moved on to the second round."

The 1999 NHRA Rookie of the Year qualified No. 4 at Pacific Raceways for last year's NHRA event. He's also qualified for every race so far this season and intends to keep up that momentum here and reach a final round and take his first Funny Car win of his career.

"We've been in the final round three times since I came to NHRA Funny Car racing in 1999, and ended up runner-up each time," he adds. "It's time for me to finally get that win, and we may be able to do it at this track. The weather and air could work to our benefit. My crew chief Phil Shuler and I are continuing to get our new team jellin' and we're making progress, so we're looking for good results here."
