Kent, Washington (July 30): After qualifying No. 6 for the Prolong Super Lubricants Nationals at Seattle International Raceway, reigning Winston Top Fuel champion, Tony Schumacher was upset in round No. 1 when he had a red light start and fouled out of competition.

Schumacher was paired against David Grubnic in round one. As Schumacher staged the car and prepared to make his run, he left the starting line early by .008 seconds which cost him the win. Grubnic had to battle tire smoke down the whole quarter mile not knowing that Schumacher hold fouled out. A perfect reaction time is .400 seconds and Schumacher's .392 reaction time would put him out in the first round for the first time in over a year.

"The driver lost this one," said a dejected Schumacher, "the guys had a great car for me this weekend and we didn't get the chance to show it today."

With his first round loss and Gary Scelzi's victory, Scelzi was able to put some distance on Schumacher in the Championship points race. Scelzi now leads Schumacher by 123 points as they have no time off before the Fram Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, California.

"It really hurts that we gave up all the ground we made up in Denver on (Gary) Scelzi."
