Lucas eighth on Northwest Nationals ladder
SEATTLE (July 10) -- Morgan Lucas and his team put the GEICO Powersports Top Fuel dragster into the top half of the elimination ladder on Saturday at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways.
Lucas made a best pass of 4.002 seconds at 299.00 mph in hot and slick conditions that dominated qualifying. That was good enough for eighth on the grid and a matchup Sunday against No. 9 qualifier Steve Torrence, who ran a 4.008 second lap at 293.35 mph.
As is customary for the Top Fuel 8 vs. 9 matchup, Lucas and Torrence should be the first ones down the racetrack on Sunday.
"We're both in the same boat, they'll have as much of an idea of that the track is going to be like as we will," Lucas said. "It's going to be a matter of survival for the first pair.
"If the marine layer comes in, it might be a fast racetrack and we're going to have to get after the car."
Lucas already knows who his potential second round opponent will be because Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier Doug Kalitta will get a bye run into the second round.
"This track is how it's always been," Lucas said. "There are parts of it in both lanes that are good and bad, it's just a matter of finding the sweet spots. I think we're going to be fine no matter what we do."
Lucas and the GEICO Powersports team had special guests on hand during the weekend as captain of the crab boat Time Bandit, Johnathan Hillstrand, from the hit TV show "Deadliest Catch," and son, Scott Hillstrand, a Time Bandit crew member as well, traveled to the Seattle area to attend the races and get to know the GEICO Powersports team.
"What a great crew, what a great bunch of guys to hang out with," Johnathan Hillstrand said. "I don't know why I've never been to one of these races yet, but I'm definitely hooked.
"I've met some of my heroes here, and have been rooting on the GEICO Powersports team the whole weekend. I can't wait to do this again."
Lucas said the Hillstrands' lively presence made their mark on the team. Johnathan and Scott also signed autographs for fans alongside Lucas during the weekend.
"Johnathan isn't just a guy on a show," Lucas said. "He seems like a wild man on the show and he lives like one in his life. That's the best part about him, he's just a real person. He likes to have fun and his whole family has been great. They're all just fantastic down-to-earth people."
