KENT, Wash. (July 30, 2000) - The first round of eliminations at Sunday's Prolong Superlubricants Northwest Nationals at Seattle International Raceway was quite disappointing for Team Mopar.

Darrell Alderman, driver of the Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, lost in the first round of Pro Stock eliminations when Troy Coughlin took a .467-.488 advantage at the start. The three-time NHRA Winston Pro Stock World Champion ran a quicker 6.977-second elapsed time at 196.04 mph to Coughlin's 6.985/196.90 outing.

"He just got me on the tree," Alderman said. "We made a fairly good run considering the hot conditions and the bumps in the right lane. We had a good weekend overall, but I wish things would have been different."

The same fate befell Alderman's Dodge Avenger teammate Scott Geoffrion, as Kurt Johnson's 6.936/198.82 outdistanced Geoffrion's 6.988/196.10. The nine-time national event winner was frustrated.

"The right lane still has its problems," Geoffrion commented. "We were still a little light on the start. We are on the right track with the program though."

Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car pilot Dean Skuza also suffered first-round blues. Skuza smoked the tires and lost to Frank Pedregon in round one. Skuza laid down a 6.337/156.23 effort and Pedregon went 5.112/284.62.

"I just don't know what happened," Skuza said. "We had the exact same setup as our 5.05 in yesterday's final session. It's so disappointing to lose in the first round."

Team Mopar will travel to Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. for next weekend's 13th annual Autolite Nationals.
