Rain halts Sunday's action at Pacific Raceways.

SEATTLE (July 28) - Persistent rain showers halted Sunday's drag racing action in the 15th annual Lucas Oil Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways. NHRA officials made the decision to postpone the event until Monday morning with the continuation of eliminations starting at 10:30 a.m. PDT.

But before the rains came, the first round was concluded with Larry Dixon mesmerizing the overflow crowd bringing them to their feet with the quickest elapsed time of eliminations. By nearly a one-tenth of a second over the field and the third quickest time of the entire event, Dixon drove his Miller Lite/Snake Racing Top Fuel dragster to a time 4.586 seconds, 322.04 mph, defeating Scott Weis in the first round.

"It was a nice run," said Dixon, who qualified in the No. 3 position. "On Saturday we ran a 4.59 and came back the second session with the sun out and ran a 4.64 ET.

"Today we had cloud cover and the track was tight. I believe that's why the car picked up ET and miles per hour from our previous best of the weekend."

Dixon's quarterfinal opponent will be Cory McClenathan, the No. 6 qualifier.

ESPN2 completes the final round race coverage with a one-hour program, airing Friday, Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. EDT.
