KENT, Wash. (July 24, 2004) - Under the new 85-percent nitromethane rule, two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon posted four consistent qualifying runs to claim the No. 5 qualifying position Saturday at Pacific Raceways.

Dixon claimed the No. 5 qualifying spot with a performance of 4.704 seconds at 308.28 mph on Friday's second qualifying pass. On Saturday, the 34-time NHRA winner recorded runs of 4.738 at 306.95 and 4.743 at 309.63 to finish qualifying at Seattle. Dixon's 4.743-second effort was the quickest E.T. of the final Top Fuel qualifying session.

"We come into this race with a new track surface, a new tire, a new percentage rule and it's been hotter than ever at this race," Dixon said. "And, we had to go at all this without any testing. I'm ecstatic with how well we've done so far. The four runs we made during qualifying were great runs."

Dixon, who won the Seattle race last July, will face former U.S. Nationals winner Terry Capp in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations. Dixon and Capp have never met during eliminations.

ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at 8 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, July 25.
