SEATTLE (July 24) - For Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Top Fuel Team, this week's trip to Seattle for the 13th Annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals (July 28-30) will be an important one both on and off the drag strip at Seattle International Raceway.
Not only will the third place Dixon attempt to entertain fans in the stands, but he has asked the assistance of his fellow NHRA drivers to help raise funds for United Cerebral Palsy of Pierce County (WA) by participating in a special all-star driver autograph session and silent auction to be held at Planet Hot Rod in nearby Milton. Teammate Ron Capps, along with other top NHRA drivers Tony Schumacher, Cory McClenathan, Bob Vandergriff, Whit Bazemore, Frank Pedregon and Allen Johnson are just a few of the pilots scheduled to appear. "I think this event is really great to see," said Dixon. "When you see all of us drivers out there fighting with each other on the track each weekend, it's great to have all of us come together and help out a good cause. It goes to show just how tight the NHRA drivers are and I am just really happy that everyone is kicking in on it." One thing that Dixon would also like to see kick in this weekend is the momentum generated after gaining nearly a round (17 points) in the Winston Top Fuel points chase after the last race in Denver. As the second half of Dixon's sixth professional season continues, he finds himself just 110 points (just over five rounds) out of the points lead, a position that he has not held since his runner up finish at the 1998 Winternationals in Pomona. His career-best finish in the points chase was his third place effort during his 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year stint.
"For the last four or five races we have lost a round or two," said Dixon. "Denver turned things around for us and we were able to gain a round.
I think now we are headed in the right direction and need to keep moving forward. Dick LaHaie has been trying some things and I think he might be able to find some more horsepower for us. As a team, we have to go into each race and try to do our very best in order to cash in on those Winston points for the end of the year."
