Force wins second straight race; moves up to third
Highlights: John Force helped both himself and teammate Tony Pedregon by winning for the second consecutive week on the NHRA POWERade tour, beating points contender Whit Bazemore in the final round of the 16th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Pacific Raceways.
In winning for a record sixth time at Seattle and for the 108th time in his Hall of Fame career, Force moved into third place in POWERade points with nine races remaining in the season. The 12-time champion has moved up four positions by reaching the finals in the last four events.
Although Pedregon was upended in the first round for the second straight week, the result of a glitch in the clutch controller, he managed to retain a 63-point lead in the race for the $400,000 championship.
TEAM CASTROL Details:
JOHN FORCE, Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang Funny Car
Qualifying position and performance: 3rd at 4.979 seconds, 308.85 mph.
Race results: Beat Scotty Cannon, Tommy Johnson Jr., Cruz Pedregon and Whit Bazemore.
Notable: Moved into third place in 2003 POWERade points by reaching the finals for the fourth consecutive event and by winning for the second week in a row.
Quotable: "To win a race like this one takes a lot of luck. We knew that we had to keep lane choice and stay in the right lane and, fortunately, we were able to do that. When Tony and Densham went out, all the guys from those teams were over helping us out. I had six Crew Chiefs out there on the starting line reading the conditions. That gives you a lot of confidence." -- JOHN FORCE.
TONY PEDREGON, Castrol SYNTEC Ford Mustang Funny Car
Qualifying position and performance: 13th at 5.137 seconds, 287.29 mph.
Race results: Lost to Del Worsham.
Notable: Second consecutive first round loss after advancing out of the first round in 23 straight races.
Quotable: "I'm not at all discouraged. We've had a mechanical problem that we're working through. That happens during any season. I'm just looking forward to getting to Sonoma (and this week's Fram/Autolite Nationals)." -- TONY PEDREGON.
GARY DENSHAM, Team Castrol/Auto Club of Southern California Ford Funny Car:
Qualifying position and performance: 10th at 5.044 seconds, 294.31 mph.
Race results: Lost to Arnie Karp.
Notable: Beaten in the first round for the third straight time.
Quotable: "We just had one of those lost weekends. We made some progress with this new car, but we jsut had no racing luck. We'll try to turn it around at Sonoma." -- GARY DENSHAM.
