KENT - Friday Recap by Larry Sullivan

KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - The first day of qualifying for the 11th annual NHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals at Seattle International Raceway ended with Kenny Bernstein, John Force, Warren Johnson, and Larry Kopp atop the ladders for their respective Professional categories. Bernstein took the number one spot in Top Fuel on a record-shattering run during the evening session, his 4.629 second elapsed time at 318.80 breaking both ends of the track record. Force took the top spot in Funny Car, also in the evening session, with a 4.941 at 308.11 mph with his Castrol GTX Mustang, quick enough to reset the track elapsed time record, but Cruz Pedregon retained the track speed record with his 5.006 second, 308.74 mph effort, also in the evening session. Johnson set both ends of the track Pro Stock record in his Pontiac. Unlike the others, his best effort was run in the afternoon session, posting an elapsed time of 6.940 seconds at 199.42 mph. Kopp takes the number-one position on the Pro Stock Truck ladder into Saturday's eliminations with a 7.661 at 175.26 in his Chevrolet S-10. Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock will hold two more qualifying sessions Saturday to set their fields for Sunday's eliminations.
