Herbert ready to oust engine gremlins, competition, in Seattle
SEATTLE (July 23, 2005) -- This isn't the first time Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools dragster team have had to deal with gremlins in the engine. Gremlins, by the way, describes just about anything that has to do with engine problems.
Herbert and the team have had some gremlins this weekend during the 18th annual CARQUEST NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways. Qualifying wrapped up Saturday with two more sessions as Herbert snagged the No. 11 position with a 4.610-second pass at 315.19 mph.
"We have definitely had a couple of issues throughout qualifying this weekend but we have a great team working through them," Herbert said. "It seems like every time we find something wrong and fix it, another problem comes up but that will stop because we will find it and solve the problem. I would rather have things go wrong during qualifying any day over them happening during eliminations. We're going to be fine when it counts."
Herbert will face Scott Kalitta in the first round Sunday. It will be the second time this season the two drivers will meet up on Sunday. Kalitta edged Herbert in the final of the season opener at Pomona Raceway in February. With a first round victory Herbert could shift the lifetime series away from the 5-5 tie.
"Realistically it never matters who you are racing in the other lane anymore," Herbert said. "The competition is pretty tough from the top spot down to the 16th position. We need to go out and run a good, clean pass and go from there."
"The best part is that we have great fan support here with a lot of Snap-on Tools dealers, customers and it's going to be a lot of fun tomorrow."
ESPN2 will air coverage of this weekend's event starting with qualifying at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. Final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, also on ESPN2.
