Herbert plants two good runs in Seattle

SEATTLE (July 22, 2005) -- Doug Herbert is already ahead of the game this weekend. The driver of the Snap-on Tools dragster drove his Top Fueler to the No. 9 spot in qualifying with two good runs during Friday qualifying a Pacific Raceways.

Herbert turned in a first pass of 4.718 seconds at 309.63 before topping it with a 4.649 at 312.50 during the 18th annual CARQUEST NHRA Nationals.

"We made a decent pass in the first session and then came back and made a better run during the second pass," Herbert said. "We even had a problem on the second run that probably cost us at least a tenth of a second. We don't know what it was just yet, but (crew chief) Wayne Dupuy and (consultant) Jim Brissette are the two guys to figure it out. By morning they will know what's going on."

Herbert said he expects the second day of qualifying to be even better.

"I think we are better this weekend at this point than we have been in the past few weeks and that's encouraging and makes us look forward to Saturday qualifying even more," Herbert said. "Wayne has found a few things over the course of the last two weeks that have needed some adjustment. It just takes time and I think we have better numbers going into Saturday this weekend and that will allow us to get our Sunday tuneup ready sooner.

"We should see similar conditions Saturday, which means we could very well run a 4.50 and that would make the entire team happy."

The NHRA POWERade Series pro qualifying continues Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. before final eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday.

ESPN2 will air coverage of this weekend's event starting with qualifying at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. Final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, also on ESPN2.
