SONOMA, Calif. - Doug Herbert was anxious to leave Seattle Sunday so he could begin thinking about the Autolite Nationals this weekend (Aug. 6-8) at Sears Point Raceway. Herbert might've been happier if the race began Monday or Tuesday instead of Friday. "I don't really want to think about Seattle (site of Sunday's Prolong Northwest Nationals at Seattle International Raceway)," said Herbert, driver of the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster. "I'm upset with myself." Herbert's ire was the result of a first-round loss to Mike Dunn in a battle of the Nos. 1 (Dunn) and 3 (Herbert) drivers in the tight NHRA Winston Series chase. Dunn left the starting line first and arrived at the finish line first with a 4.750-second, 291.51 mph clocking to Herbert's 4.717 at 295.53. The difference was Dunn's .463 reaction time to Herbert's .518. "It was very disappointing because I had been working on my (starting line) lights during qualifying," said Herbert. "That was a very important run for us. The more I think about it, the madder I get. At least there isn't much time to think about it." There was some consolation - albeit just a little - for Herbert in the fact that Dunn's reaction time was the quickest of the day in Top Fuel. With crew chief Dick LaHaie doing the tuning, Herbert had consistent qualifying runs of 4.783, 4.679 (which left him seventh overall) and 4.759 seconds going into competition. The early loss dropped Herbert from third to fifth in points. Dunn still leads with 866 and Herbert has 792. Kenny Bernstein is second (844), followed by Joe Amato (840) and Gary Scelzi (796). "There are still a lot of races left," Herbert noted. "We just have to get our Snap-on Racing dragster back into the winner's circle." The next chance will be at Sears Point, where qualifying is scheduled for 3 and 7 p.m. Friday, noon and 4 p.m. Saturday. Eliminations Sunday begin at 11 a.m. Qualified: No. 7, 4.679 seconds at 298.93 mph. First round: Mike Dunn def. Herbert Pro Winners: Joe Amato in Top Fuel, Del Worsham in Funny Car, Kurt Johnson in Pro Stock.
