Motor's performance pleases Herbert despite opening-round loss

KENT, Wash., July 27, 2003 - Doug Herbert looked pretty happy for a guy who'd just lost in the first round of Top Fuel in the CarQuest Nationals at Pacific Raceways Sunday.

"Actually, we are about as happy as we can be for losing in the first round," admitted Herbert after he'd been eliminated by David Grubnic,

Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel crew made changes in the engine prior to last week's race at Denver but couldn't find out if things were running better in the mile-high air. Sunday morning, Herbert, crew chief Ron Douglas and tuning consultant Jim Brissette did some more experimenting and discovered they're going in the right direction.

"The motor definitely was more powerful," Herbert said. "I wish we'd had our Friday night run. That could've made a difference. Now we can work with the clutch and ignition. When we get it figured out, we should be good."

The Friday qualifying session was canceled due to a huge oil down and the track curfew.

Herbert left Seattle in seventh place in NHRA POWERade Series standings with 650 points but is just four points out of sixth.

He is looking forward to this week's race, the Fram/Autolite Nationals at Sonoma, Calif., where he is the defending champion. It's the final race of three in a row.
