McClenathan faces Baca on Sunday

KENT, Wash. (July 26, 2003) - At Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., Cory McClenathan, driver of the Darrell Gwynn-owned, NY Yankees/ Berryman Products dragster, finished qualifying for the NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Nationals No. 11 on the qualifying grid.

McClenathan's best run came in Friday's first qualifying session when he recorded a pass of 4.915 seconds at 273.22 mph. By qualifying 11th, the Riverside, Calif. driver will face David Baca in tomorrow's opening round of eliminations. Baca qualified No. 6 with an elapsed time of 4.796 seconds.

"I can sum up track conditions in two words: hot and greasy," said McClenathan. "All our problems out there yesterday and today is not just the track's fault. The sun has been shinning on the track all day, both days. It's been hotter than usual. The oil downs aren't helping. That a deadly combination for loss of traction, hazing tires, you name it. It's been giving the crew chiefs fits.

"Fortunately, John Steward, the crew chief on this NY Yankees/Berryman Products dragster, has been doing a great job considering the circumstances. I look forward to racing David Baca, my former boss. While we're friends, when I race him he just another driver in the other lane who I want to defeat. We'll try to go into tomorrow with the right attitude and race the track."

Final eliminations for the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals get underway at 11 a.m. (Local time-PDT) on Sunday.
