MCCLENATHAN QUALIFIES NO. 10 IN SEATTLE
KENT, Wash. (July 19, 2008) -- Cory McClenathan qualified the FRAM Top Fuel dragster in the No. 10 position for the 21st annual NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways, south of Seattle. McClenathan made the field with an elapsed time of 3.869 seconds at 313.80 mph, racing for the second straight event to the 1000-ft. finish line.
He also recorded a 3.932/283.61 on his first run Friday, good for No. 9 at the time. He slowed on his second attempt, shutting off early and coasting to a 8.084/80.00 to complete the first day of qualifying in No. 11. Following his quick 3.869/313.80 in today's third session, McClenathan then laid down a 3.875/309.42 on his final run to secure the No. 10 spot with the second quickest run of the round.
"You really want to get four good qualifying runs; that's the biggest thing," said McClenathan, who entered the race fourth in the Top Fuel point standings. "We suffered parts breakage on the first run Friday. On the second run the track was actually very good and the tires stuck so hard we didn't quite have a handle on it and the FRAM dragster shook the tires. Instead of pedaling, it's just smarter to shut off and come back for the Saturday runs.
"Today we ran a 3.86 and a 3.87 with the sun out, and we have a very consistent race car right now. Hopefully the sun will be out nice and early tomorrow. We need to make this FRAM car go past the first round; that's our first and foremost thought. Every one of these guys out here is tough. This FRAM Top Fuel dragster has gone to the semis three races in a row and we hope that momentum keeps on going with us.
"I'm excited," he added. "This is the Western Swing (Denver, Seattle and Sonoma, Calif.) and this is where you need to gather points. Right now that's what we're here for."
McClenathan will face No. 7 qualifier JR Todd during the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
