On the strength of a 6.954-second elapsed time and top speed of 198.20 mph, Tom Martino qualified the CENTURY 21 Firebird 14th for Sunday's final eliminations of the Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals in Kent, Washington. This set the stage for a first-round encounter with Pro Stock points leader Jeg Coughlin Jr., against whom Martino has 4-3 career elimination round record. However, after battling to get a handle on his racecar and the tricky Seattle International Raceway surface throughout time trials, Martino knew changes were in order, and immediately after his last run on Saturday afternoon started a virtual overhaul of his car's set-up. "This is a race where we were able to make the field on horsepower, because our Century 21 Firebird was out of control during qualifying. It was spinning the tires, slipping the clutch, bouncing and moving around every time out. I know this track has a reputation as a difficult surface, and I'd love to blame it on that, but there were other competitors who were able to negotiate it.

"But we're far from giving up. We have a tough competitor in the first round tomorrow in Jeggie, so we are going to work late tonight completely changing the tune-up. We're changing everything but the paint job and the driver, looking to find a set-up that will do a better job of getting us down the track. The first round tomorrow will tell us just how good a job we did."
