ANTRON BROWN QUALIFIES FIFTH AT SEATTLE, SECURES POSITION IN COUNTDOWN TO 1
KENT, Wash. (July 10, 2010) - Antron Brown drove his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 5 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Pacific Raceways and more importantly secured a position in the Countdown to 1 six-race playoff that begins at the prestigious U.S. Nationals in September.
Brown, who carded the provisional No. 5 qualifying position on Friday afternoon at Pacific Raceways with an elapsed time of 3.964-seconds, stayed fifth in the order after Saturday's first qualifying session when the Matco Tools/U.S. Army car overpowered the track. Brown's bright blue car lost traction and slowed to a run of 4.793 seconds 153.82 mph. On his final qualifying effort, the former college track star posted a lap of 4.023 at 283.37 on a hot Pacific Raceways track. It is the 19th time that Brown has qualified fifth. He has an average qualifying position of 4.93 in 14 races this season with four No. 1 qualifiers.
"It's tough out there on this Pacific Raceways track," Brown said. "We struggled a little bit today, but we qualified fifth and getting in the show is what matters. You can win from any of those starting spots and we're happy being in the top five. We're excited to clinch a spot in the Countdown (to 1) and we're going to take it one round at a time on Sunday starting with Troy Buff."
Brown will face off against No. 12 qualifier Troy Buff in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at Pacific Raceways. Brown, who has 329 career round wins, is 4-1 in five career races against Buff.
