SONOMA, Calif., Aug. 6, 2000 - Doug Herbert was trying to look for a silver lining but couldn't find one. He was tired and he was disappointed with another luckless day at the drag races.

A promising Sunday at the Fram Autolite Nationals at Sears Point Raceway came to an abrupt end in the first round when the engine Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster quit in the middle of the quarter-mile run. Leading Kenny Bernstein at the time, Herbert could only look over and watch his opponent advance to the quarterfinals.

"I don't know what broke (in the motor)," said the Cherryville, N.C., driver, "but I was ahead of him when the engine blew up. It's very disappointing. Our car was running well. I thought we had a good chance to beat Bernstein and pay him back for his first-round win over us last week (at Seattle). Instead, we had our typical amount of luck at Sonoma . . . none."

The final numbers had Bernstein winning with a 4.782 to Herbert's coasting 5.666 at 164.97 mph.

The mechanical failure followed a good showing on a very marginal racetrack, one that had a definite good lane (left) and unwanted lane (right).

"We were happy with our qualifying times," Herbert commented on his best of 4.702, which left him sixth overall, and one of 4.746, which was run in the right lane on a slippery track in Saturday's final qualifying outing. "We need to start winning some rounds of racing.

Herbert's next opportunity comes at the Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals, Aug. 18-20, at Brainerd, Minn. He goes into that event ninth in points with 571.
