SONOMA, CA (Aug. 4) - After the first day of action at the Fram Autolite Nationals, Larry Dixon posted a personal track-record elapsed time of 4.681 seconds at 313.22 mph in the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster to secure the No. 4 position heading into Saturday's two final qualifying sessions. Dixon's previous best E.T. at Sears Point Raceway was his 4.721-second effort in 1996.
Dixon began his qualifying quest in the right lane during the heat of the day and needed to pedal the 6,000 horsepower ride after losing traction en route to a time of 8.56 seconds at 90.77 mph. Despite the sub-par run, the Miller Lite car sat in the No. 13 position after the first trip down the quarter mile track. Crew Chief Dick LaHaie and the Miller Lite team would rebound nicely in the night session as Dixon produced his personal track-best numbers as the cooler temperatures provided a better racing surface and positioned the No. 91 car solidly in the field.
"I'll tell you what... As soon as I hit the throttle the car snapped the front end up and I knew that I was racing on a real tight track," said Dixon. "Now we need to go back to work because on race day this track is going to be real tough to get down."
The Southern California native's previous best qualifying effort at Sonoma was a No. 7 seeding in 1998 where he posted a first round finish to David Grubnic. Dixon, who now resides in Indianapolis, is in search of his first elimination round win after posting five first round finishes since climbing behind the wheel in 1995.
The final two qualifying sessions of the weekend resume Saturday and are scheduled to be run at Noon and 4 PM PT. Sunday's elimination round begins at 11 AM and will be televised by ESPN 2.
