RACE OF CHAMPIONS WINNERS CROWNED AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY'S NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES FINALS
COMMERCE, Ga. -- The best of the best in bracket racing squared off against each other today at Atlanta Dragway where the NHRA Summit Racing Series Southeast Division Finals is under way. More than 400 racers are on hand this weekend vying for individual and team honors in Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman and Super Pro Bike as well as a High School category but today's action was about the top racers from each track facing off in the Race of Champions, a race within a race where they ran for a share of the purse worth nearly $5,000.
Jamie Alexander, Grand Bay, Ala., racing for Mobile (Ala.) Dragway scored the Race of Champions win in Super Pro, beating out Donald Dady, Westville, Fla., who was behind the wheel of his '35 Dodge for Emerald Coast Dragway. In Pro ET, B.J. Bianchi of Sunshine Dragway wheeled his '90 Mustang to the win for Sunshine Dragway, ousting Todd Berry, Tuscumbia, Ala., running his '55 Chevy for Huntsville (Ala.) Dragway. Jason McClure, New Market, Ala., jettisoned Kevin Roberts, St. Petersburg, Fla., in the Sportsman final. McClure represents Huntsville Dragway and Roberts runs for Sunshine Dragway. The win in Super Pro Bike went to Buddy Tompkins, Deltona, Fla., who is racing for Orlando (Fla.) Speed World Dragway aboard his '83 Suzuki. He bested Lonny Rueckert, Bradenton, Fla., who is running his '82 Suzuki for Bradenton Motorsports Park. Donovan Norton, also of Bradenton, took his '04 F-150 pickup to the winner's circle, beating out Chris Peeler, Dresden, Tenn., in the final. Norton races for Sunshine Dragway and Peeler wheels his '73 Challenger for Northwest Tennessee Motorsports Park.
Eliminations begin Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Racers in Sunday's eliminations will compete for cash awards of $15,700. The winners in each of the top four categories will advance to compete against winners from NHRA's other six divisions at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November.
