Schumacher Dispels Recent Rumors on SPEED's Wind Tunnel
Below are select quotes from Tuesday's, Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain on SPEED Channel. Don Schumacher, multi-car championship owner in NHRA talks about rumors of a boycott with NHRA and his plans for Pro Stock in 2005.
About the rumor the PRO's (Professional Racers Organization) will be sitting out a qualifying round this weekend at the Chicago NHRA national event in protest of their "low" purses: Well there isn't any boycott. PRO, which I am a board member of, is communicating with NHRA and we are working towards a resolution to all issues that are in the sport of drag racing and that goes from safety issues to purses. At this point the sport is going forward very, very strongly. We (PRO) support that. I support that. There isn't going to be any boycott or any sitting out to my knowledge at Chicago or any other race. We look to work with NHRA and settle and move forward.
Was this threat communicated to NHRA because it was a very specific statement that the competitors were going to sit out one round of qualifying? Are you saying that was never an option or it was an option that is now off the table? I really can't say what the option was, I have not seen any of the communication that was directly given to the NHRA, so I would be speaking out of place in trying to communicate and say what was in any letter or communication with NHRA. So I really have to say no comment to that.
Your team won't sit out a round? I support PRO a 100% and I will do what PRO deems is the correct thing to do. I do not see my team or any team sitting out a round at the Chicago race.
About his plans on Pro Stock for 2005 and addressing the rumor that Jeg Coughlin will be driving: We are putting together a two car pro stock team and we will see if that grows into a three car team for next year. Of course I have talked to Jeg Coughlin. I have talked to numerous drivers out there. I have not hired a driver but who is any better than Jeg Coughlin out there? He is a fan favorite, has a great business, a great family and he is a multi-time world champion. I try to surround myself with the best people possible and Jeg would be a great choice. But the great opportunity I have is, I am building this team...not anybody else and once I make those decisions I will certainly be willing to talk about them. I have not made the decisions as to who will drive my Pro Stock cars. I look forward to making those decisions soon and will probably announce things before or after Pomona.
