SCELZI WINS FIRST PICK AS TEAMS DRAFTED FOR NHRA SOFTBALL CLASSIC; TICKETS AVAILABLE THROUGH FIRSTENERGY STADIUM
SONOMA, Calif. -- Ron Capps probably didn't expect to be drafted after he became an NHRA POWERade Series Funny Car driver, but that's what happened Friday in Sonoma as teams were chosen for the NHRA Softball Classic, a game slated for Aug. 14 at the Reading Phillies' FirstEnergy Stadium.
Capps was the top choice of coach Gary Scelzi, his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, as Scelzi and Antron Brown chose sides at Infineon Raceway. Game day will begin with an autograph session from 5 to 6 p.m. and continue with the first pitch at 7 p.m. in Reading, Pa., before the 24th annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit DRAW (Drag Racing Association of Women), an organization that in addition to providing emotional support has since 1985 given more than $3 million to injured drag racers.
The Reading Phillies are the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies.
Scelzi, who snapped up CSK Funny Car pilot Del Worsham in Round 2, won the first choice on a coin toss.
"It's because Ron and I are such good friends, it had nothing to do with his playing ability," Scelzi said. "I don't even know if Ron can play ball to be honest with you. I know he's very good at motorcycles and dirt cars and racing a Funny Car so I know he's very coordinated, but we didn't even talk about it. We want to do this to win, but we also wanted to get a bunch of guys that we get along with so that's why we got Del Worsham, Allen Johnson, (Dave) Grubnic, you know, guys we have fun with all the time and I ended up with almost everyone I wanted on my team, there were still a few guys I didn't get that I wanted but that's ok.
"Talent, looks, personality. You pretty much name it and we've got it. It's a curse, I know. We're going to throw the evil horns at them and kill these guys. Vandergriff's a little too cocky over there for me. He was bragging about years ago when they played about how many home runs he hit. I want to see him hit my spit ball! We'll see. I'm just telling Vandergriff to bring it because the Wild Thing's coming after him!"
Brown chose Bob Vandergriff, driver of the UPS Top Fuel dragster, in the first round.
"I did a little scouting," Brown said. "I know Bob Vandergriff plays a little softball. I worked with Mike Neff in the shop. I know he's kind of athletic and he's an old motocross racer like I am so I knew if he could ride dirt bikes he could hit a ball. And you know Dave Connolly, Justin Humphreys, Larry Dixon, Tommy Johnson Jr., Brandon Bernstein, I think I got pretty good little crew here. And Steve Johnson, that crazy joker, from Pro Stock Bike, you know, if anything else he could distract the other team so that we can get the win."
Tickets may be purchased through the Reading Phillies ticket office at FirstEnergy Stadium, by visiting www.readingphillies.com or by calling (610) 375-8469.
