DAY ONE COMPLETE AT CHEROKEE COUNTY
RUSK, Texas. -- In the first rounds of qualifying for the East Texas State Championships and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Spencer Massey and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Jimmy Jones took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.
Massey, of Fort Worth, Texas outran the field with a pass of 5.460 seconds at 255.39 mph followed by Spring Hill, Kan., racer Randy Meyer with a 5.495 second ran at 248.80 mph. Massey is looking for his second win of the year to go along with his national event win last month in Atlanta and three runner-up finishes earlier this year.
Jones, who runs out of Cleburne, Texas, covered the quarter-mile in 5.897 seconds, 244.12 mph with former Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Lee Callaway in second running 6.626 seconds at 148.64 mph. Jones, looking for his first win of the year, is the defending event champion as is Massey.
Harker Racing is out in full force out of Gainesville , Ga., with Steve Harker qualified fourth in funny car while Steve's daughter Kate has her work cut out for her in the dragster class. Kate is currently qualified eleventh, outside the 8-car field.
Leading the Comp Eliminator field is Steven Kent of Lottie, La., in his '02 Cavalier with a lap of 8.877 seconds followed by Chase Williams of Carthage, Texas at 8.921 seconds.
In the divisions Reher-Morrison Top Sportsman class it was Earl Folse leading the pack at 6.791 seconds at 201.46 mph with Canyon, Texas, resident Greg Lair finishing second at 6.837, 206.39 mph. Michael Kile is No. 1 in the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster category at 6.790 seconds, 202.03 mph and Kelly Pulley is No. 1 in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson with a perfect 0.000 second reaction time.
Michael Kobleur and John Duzac rounded out the leaders after day one of qualifying taking the No. 1 spots in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Kobleur ran his '66 Impala to an 11.286 second pass while Duzac of Covington, La., clocked in at 10.654 seconds in his '67 Camaro.
Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. The track is located at 1157 DR 2402 in Rusk, approximately 40 miles south of Tyler, Texas.
