Ron Capps To Start In Top Half Of The Field For NHRA Supernationals
Closing out qualifying with two stout runs driving the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car, Ron Capps captured the sixth starting position for Sunday’s 42nd annual NHRA SuperNationals here at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
The Southern Californian entered today’s final two qualifying rounds outside the starting field, but two of the quickest runs in the sessions – 4.115-seconds at 307.51 miles per hour followed by 4.108 at 305.15 – earned him three bonus points and an opening round race against Jim Head.
“You want to end qualifying on a good, solid run, on a high note,” said the Don Schumacher Racing driver. “And this was a huge boost for this NAPA team.
“My confidence, as well as the confidence of the entire NAPA team just grows with runs like these.”
This is the third race under the direction of crew chief Tim Richards, to which Capps attributes the turn-a-round in the team’s fortunes.
“It’s really neat watching Tim’s methodical approach for each run,” he explained. “That 4.10 (in the final session) was really great, especially in the right lane, which was not particularly favorable for Funny Cars today.
“Every run we make, Tim continues to get the car to do what he wants. And with each run, everyone on the NAPA team, including me, gets more and more confident in Tim’s work and our own ability to win.
“All I can say about today’s final two runs – it was huge for us!”
Capps came into the weekend holding the 10th – and final playoff position – in the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car standings, with nine regular-season races (including this weekend) remaining.
