DUNN QUIETLY CONTENDING FOR NHRA WINSTON TITLE IN TOP FUEL

DINWIDDIE, Va. -- If you take a look at raw numbers, it's hard to believe that Mike Dunn is fourth in the NHRA Winston Top Fuel point standings. Dunn's best elapsed time this season in the Team Mopar Dragster is 4.684 seconds, tied for eighth-quickest among the top 10 drivers in the standings. His best speed is 310.34, ninth-best. But numbers don't win drag races. Consistency does, and few Top Fuel drivers have shown more of that this season than Dunn. He has lost in the first round only twice in five races and was runner-up at the Mac Tools Gatornationals in March at Gainesville, Fla. "Walk softly but carry a big stick works," Dunn said. "Those 4.68's have come at opportune times. I think the competition knows, even though we're not a threat to lay down a big number at this point, they know that we're going to get down the track." Dunn, from Wrightsville, Pa., will try to gain ground on the top three in points at the third annual, $1,488,750 Pennzoil Nationals presented by Trak Auto, April 24-27 at Virginia Motorsports Park. The race is the sixth event of the 22-event, $30-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1997. While his car's performance numbers aren't topping the charts, Dunn still thinks he's in good position to challenge for his first NHRA Winston championship. Consistent cars are easier to tune and drive on hot, slippery racetracks than the often-temperamental, high-horsepower cars that post low times and eye-popping speeds. "We feel like if we can pick up another five-hundredths of a second and keep the consistency that we have then we can win some races and contend for the Winston championship," Dunn said. "We're going to get beat every now and then, but you're going to play the odds."
