New SKULL Gear Chevy Cobalt Tests Well; Connolly to Drive Car at Richmond
With Mother Nature providing a few extra days to test their new SKULL Gear Chevrolet Cobalt, Dave Connolly, crew chief Tommy Utt and the crew took full advantage at Rockingham, N.C. Raceway.
The decision was made to run the new Cobalt the when the rain-delayed Torco Racing Fuels Nationals resumes at Virginia Motorsports Park, Friday through Sunday.
"We are going to give it a try," Connolly said after completing test runs Wednesday evening. "The car ran 6.66 (seconds) but made a couple of bad runs, too. I think we got a handle on the car down the back half of the track. The car ran good down low."
The team wasn't pleased with the car's performance in a test outing a week ago and decided to run the battle-tested 2005 Cobalt instead. But they never had an opportunity to run it due to inclement weather. They headed for Victor Cagnazzi's Mooresville, N.C., shop when the event was postponed and prepared the Todd Bevis-built car for testing, and now the race.
"It felt comfortable to me and I think it's going to be pretty fast," Connolly added, "but we need to run against the other guys to really find out where we are. I think it's going to be better than the old car."
Answers will come Friday when qualifying begins with sessions at 3 and 6 p.m. Two more runs are scheduled Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. to set the 16-car fields for Sunday's eliminations.
Connolly is third in POWERade Series points with 1270, trailing only leader Jason Line (1453) and Greg Anderson (1397) with two more events -- at Las Vegas, Oct. 27-29, and Pomona, Calif. (Nov. 9-12) -- on deck after this weekend.
