Brad Jeter Wins His Second Pro Stock Truck Title in Chevy S-10

DINWIDDIE, Va.; Monday, May 3, 1999: Brad Jeter, driving a Chevy S-10 Pickup sponsored by Karl Chevrolet, won his second Pro Stock Truck title of his career in four final-round appearances. He easily defeated Bob Panella Jr.'s Chevy S-10 in the final at the rain-delayed Pennzoil Nationals on Virginia Motorsports Park's quarter-mile dragstrip when Panella red-lighted at the starting line and was disqualified. Chevy S-10s have won each of the first four events of the 1999 Winston Drag Racing Series. No. 2 qualifier Jeter rocketed to the finish line in an attempt to break Jerry Haas' hold on the national elapsed-time record, but was unable to do so with his 7.559-second pass at 177.63 mph. No. 1 qualifier Haas, in the Texas Harley-Davidson Chevy S-10, took home 20 bonus points for claiming that record with his 7.505-second lap during qualifying. Jeter did, however, establish a track speed record of 178.52 mph in first round of eliminations. "I had a lot of confidence in Houston," said Jeter, 24, of Greenville, S.C. "We were No. 1 qualifier and ran real good there. I think the confidence kind of relaxed me a little bit. I fell asleep at the starting line in the second round. We came here with a game plan to get the driver back in the program. It feels good to know that I can do it again." "I think I was too ready," said Panella, 28, of Stockton, Calif., who qualified eighth. "I was pretty pumped up and knew that we had run really close to Brad the round before, so we had a hell of a chance. Chances are I was letting the clutch out when the yellow light came on. We were kind of behind throughout qualifying, but today we were as good as anybody. I think we got everybody's attention at least. I did it with my own motor." Jeter, along with the four other Chevy S-10 drivers who qualified in the top six campaign Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins-built 358 cu. in. Chevy V8 engines (Haas, Tim Freeman, Mark Osborne and Larry Kopp). Panella builds his own. Jeter defeated Mark Whisnant (S-10), Dale Eaton (Dodge) and Larry Kopp (S-10) to reach the final, while Panella eliminated Dave Spitzer (GMC), Jeff Lukovich (S-10) and points leader Mark Osborne (S-10) en route to the final round. Chevy S-10s top the Winston Championship point standings, with Mark Osborne leading the way with 382, followed by Jeter (344), Panella (313), Kopp (262) and S-10 driver Randy Daniels (256). Next up for the Pro Stock Truck class is the NHRA Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway May 13-16.
