Troy Coughlin turns the corner at Reading
Saturday's rain gave way to clear skies and cool conditions for eliminations on Sunday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Reading, PA. The favorable conditions put a premium on horsepower as the factory door slammers of the Pro Stock class took to the quarter mile at Maple Grove raceway for first round action.
Troy Coughlin faced off against Gene Wilson in opening round action. The win went to Coughlin with a solid opening pass of 6.757 seconds at 203.4 mph to Wilson's 9.22 second run at 97.59 mph.
Troy had lane choice by one-thousandth of a second over fellow competitor Mike Edwards in second round action. Coughlin elected to take the left lane. The race was over before it started as Edwards fouled out by seven-thousandths of a second automatically turning on the win light for Troy who posted a strong run of 6.738 seconds at 203.83 mph.
Semifinal action featured a head to head match up with current POWERade points leader Greg Anderson. Lane choice went to Anderson who elected to take the right lane. Troy was first out of the gate first by over two-hundredths of a second and never looked back winning on a holeshot. Troy posted yet another 6.738 second pass at 203.34 mph to Anderson's quicker but losing run of 6.722 seconds at 205.54 mph.
Troy matched up against Warren Johnson in the forth a final round of eliminations. Troy had lane choice and opted for the left lane. The win went to Johnson after Troy fouled by the narrowest of margins.
"I was really pleased with our performance this weekend," said Troy. "The competition is pretty fierce out there. To go rounds on Sunday is a pretty good indication that our program is headed in the right direction. The entire team did a great job. We are definitely looking forward to Dallas after our outing this weekend."
