WJ Keeps Pace, Starts Sixth in Reading
Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team completed their first objective at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals on Saturday, capturing the sixth starting position for Sunday's final eliminations In Reading, PA. After opening with the fifth quickest time on Friday, Johnson took advantage of the improved conditions at Maple Grove Raceway to better his time by almost a tenth of a second, covering the quarter-mile in 6.615-seconds with the second fastest top speed of the round at 209.20 mph.
Although this marks the 19th time in 22 Reading starts that WJ will start in the top half of the field, he acknowledged there was still plenty of work to be done as they look to secure their spot in the second round of this year's POWERade championship playoffs.
"Although we're steadily making progress with our GM Performance Parts GTO, it's not yet where we would like it to be in terms of predictability. For example, we make what we believe are calculated, logical changes and sometimes we get illogical results. For example, this afternoon the ambient temperatures were still relatively cool, while the track temperature got hotter, so we had an increase in horsepower with an equivalent decrease in traction, which exacerbated our issues. We'll take a look at the notes from our qualifying runs and come up with a plan for tomorrow.
"We did make a couple decent runs, so we'll have to back up to where those runs were and see what we can come up with. I believe we only need to win one round to guarantee our spot in the playoffs, but we're honestly looking to win four. We're going to make our changes and go for it."
