TOMMY JOHNSON JR. POSTS FIRST ROUND FINISH
- Sets Sights At Skoal Showdown -
READING, Penn. (Aug. 23, 2007) -- In what has been the NHRA's longest delayed event, Skoal Racing's Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr. made one final push on Monday morning for the Countdown to the Championship, but ultimately completed the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals with a first round finish.
Johnson weathered some challenges with his Skoal Racing Chevy Impala throughout qualifying into Sunday's eliminators. On Friday, the car had a blower explosion and oiled the track after Johnson's second run. After entering Saturday in a non-qualifying spot, Johnson sped up the ranks with a 4.859-second elapsed time at 318 mph. By the end of the day, Johnson and Skoal Racing sat in the no. 8 position facing no. 9 Tony Bartone on Sunday.
The NHRA was able to complete the Top Fuel rounds and three sets of Funny Car rounds. Unfortunately Johnson and his Skoal Racing crew were not part of that group--their run was re-scheduled for Monday morning. Even though their confidence was still running high, the Impala lost traction on the way to the finish line and Johnson was defeated by Bartone with a pass of 4.965.
"It's definitely disappointing to not have made it in the Top 8, but what could you do about it now," said Johnson. "It's actually pretty relieving. There was an enormous amount of pressure in the last few races and I definitely was not having fun. That's not saying I did not want to be the best out there, but now I can relax, play spoiler, and maybe win a few races. I'm kind of excited about it."
The Skoal Racing team will now head to the home-base of both Johnson and Don "The Snake" Prudhomme--Indianapolis, IN. He will not only compete in the Mac Tools US Nationals, but also take his no. 4 qualifying position in the Skoal Showdown and vie for the $100,000 purse to the winner of a field of eight Funny Car drivers.
