PAIR-O-SMOKERS LEAVE WILK 9th HEADING INTO RACE DAY
The Maple Grove track, on Saturday, was clearly good enough to yield strong times and big speeds, as witnessed by Matt Hagan's successful bid to back up his national record 4.011 with a strong 4.046 during Saturday's final session, but the window of opportunity was a narrow one, and Tim Wilkerson failed to negotiate the full 1,000 feet on this day. He will enter eliminations from the 9th spot, and will face Paul Lee in round one.
"You could go fast and quick out there, and we all saw that, but it wasn't a smorgasbord where you could just pile it on and take it all with you," Wilkerson said. "A lot of very good teams failed to make full laps, and that's just because it was very good out there, but the whole combination of air and track wasn't so perfect you could still get by if you missed a little. That happens, and today we tried some things and went for some gusto but it didn't hook up. On the last one, it got out there far enough I thought it was going to make it, right up until it didn't.
"In the end, we're probably right about where we should be and everyone out here had some hits and some whiffs. I really wanted to get one good lap on the board today, just to set us up a little better for Sunday, but it didn't happen so we'll fall back on our knowledge and our experience here, and we'll go out there on Sunday to race the lap. Paul and Big Jim (Dunn) are running great, but that's not in our playbook. We never race the other team, we just race the lane and I think the lanes are fair enough for us to have a good shot from whatever side we're on. We'll give it our best shot, that's for sure."
