MOHNTON, Penn. - SUMMIT FastNews - This should be titled, "Wrath of Floyd," but somehow that doesn't have the dramatic impact of something like "Wrath of Khan." Even so, uninvited participant Hurricane Floyd has washed out Thursday qualifying at the 15th annual True Value Keystone Nationals. The good news is that the weather forecasts are favorable for making this a three-day event, on a compressed schedule. It has been raining here for about 24 hours now, but the rain has tapered off and should move completely out of the area by late evening. How fast the saturated ground will firm back up is anyone's guess, but right now any movement off the pavement produces instant mud and ruts, so race officials are doing all they can to preserve the parking areas until the rain stops. If the weather predictions hold, Stock and Super Stock racers (who are being assembled at a nearby mall) will move into the pits overnight and will have a one-shot qualifying session at 8:45 AM before beginning eliminations. Federal-Mogul and Comp racers will begin their qualifying at 1:00 PM, followed by the first Pro session at 2:45 PM. Super Comp and Super Gas racers will remain at the mall and will be parked after the ground has a chance to firm up a bit more. They will hold one time trial and early-round eliminations Saturday, along with the regular "semi-Pro" and Pro Saturday schedule. The remaining Stock and Super Stock racers will hold their third round of eliminations Saturday evening. One unknown in all this is the effect of the likely evening dew on the scheduled evening sessions. These Pennsylvania valleys are notorious for developing fog and dew after heavy rains, so there's a good chance that some of the scheduled Pro session Friday will also feel the effects of the Wrath of Floyd.
