SCELZI TAKES WINSTON POINTS LEAD AT NHRA PIONEER KEYSTONE NATS
by Ed Dykes READING, Pa. - SUMMIT FastNews - Reigning NHRA Winston Top Fuel Champion Gary Scelzi took the points lead for the first time this year with a win at today's Pioneer Keystone Nationals, contested here at Maple Grove Raceway. In the other professional categories, Angelle Seeling took her first win of the year in Pro Stock Motorcycle, Dean Skuza defeated John Force in the Funny Car final round, and Kurt Johnson took Pro Stock honors. Scelzi defeated Mike Dunn in the final round for the third race in a row; Dunn's Mopar-backed dragster broke the rear end just off the starting line. Scelzi, who qualified in the #1 position with a track-record 4.558 second elapsed time, ran 4.637 at 305.39 miles per hour against Dunn's coasting dragster in the final. "Team Winston's back where it belongs," said the champ. "And it's a great feeling. We haven't led the points all year, and it's nice to be back" It was Scelzi's fourth win of the season, in five final rounds. He leads Cory McClenathan in the Winston Championship by 25 points. Skuza's win was his third of the year over the veteran Force, and only his second career event victory. His Matco Tools-sponsored Dodge Avenger Funny Car covered the quarter-mile in 5.039 seconds at 288.55 miles per hour, while Force ran 5.112 at 282. Though Force lost in the final round, he extended his Winston Championship lead over Ron Capps to 89 points. Kurt Johnson defeated Mike Edwards in the Pro Stock final, avenging Edwards' win over Kurt and his dad Warren at the recent U.S. Nationals. Edwards defeated the elder Johnson in the semifinal, but Kurt outran him in the final, 6.984 to 7.034. Angelle Seeling scored an emotional victory in Pro Stock Motorcycle when Matt Hines broke in the final round. Her win, along with Scelzi's, gave Team Winston their first-ever double victory. In the other categories, Michael Gunderson took Federal-Mogul Dragster honors, Bob Newberry won in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, John Frech won Competition Eliminator, Ken Montgomery was the Super Stock winner, Mike Walter took Stock honors, Scott Clatty won in Super Comp, and Jim Morrison scored in Super Gas. A record crowd of 115.800 watched the four days of competition. The next stop on the NHRA tour will be at Heartland Park Topeka, in two weeks.
