CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PIONEER KEYSTONE NATIONALS MAPLE GROVE RACEWAY NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SUNDAY, SEPT. 20, 1998
FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28
WHIT BAZEMORE, TEAM WINSTON CAMARO Z28, was eliminated by Dean Skuza in the semifinal, 5.070/291.73 for Skuza, 6.696/238.03 for Bazemore. Whit's tires went up in smoke when he took off at the light.
"It was very frustrating, very, very frustrating, because I felt we would have had something for John (Force) in the final. It was a given that he was going to be in the final. I felt really good about the consistency we displayed all weekend. It was something mechanical, we just don't know what happened. It blew the tires off immediately. There was no way it should have done that. No way. It's very frustrating to lose a race when you have an outstanding opportunity to win. Yo don't always have those opportunities and you have to take advantagae of them when they present themselves. The way the Team Winston Camaro was running we had something left. If we had to run a 4.90 or at least a mid .90 we could have done that fairly easily and make it into the final." ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO MEET FORCE IN THE FINAL? "I'm just disappointed to not win the race when I thought we had an outstanding opportunity to do so. And a lot of guys made mistakes and beat themselves in the driver's seat." ON THE SECOND ROUND AGAINST CHUCK ETCHELLS: "We knew the race against Chuck (Etchells) was going to be very close. When we towed up there and I'm belted in the car I was thinking to myself we're going to run almost identical e.t.s, it's going to be up to me to win this round. Fortunately, we were able to do the job. I never saw Chuck until right at the finish line, when I shut off he was there so I knew it was close." MORE ON THE RUN AGAINST SKUZA: "Then against Skuza we pretty much left the car alone. We thought he'd run a mid 5.0 and we thought we'd run another 5 flat or an .01, since we were in the better lane. That was going to be a little better than our .03 against Chuck. The Camaro didn't go 10 feet and blew the tires off it. We think it could be the ignition, it could be the clutch or it could be the fact that the driver didn't put it on the high side (didn't richen up the fuel system before he stages), but there's no problem with any of those areas that we can see."
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, was ousted by Whit Bazemore in the second round, on a holeshot advantage.
ETCHELLS: "I'm not sure why, but I blinked at the worst possible moment, and the next thing I heard was Whit's motor, so I knew I was in trouble. It's a shame, because for the second race in a row, the Kendall Camaro Z28 was running great, and we weren't able to take advantage of it. But we'll take that and head to Topeka and try to put it all together there!"
