FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, was eliminated in the first round by Tony Pedregon, when he was disqualified for crossing the centerline.
"The loss was very disappointing. It's amazing how much more disappointing it is when the Funny Car points race is this close. We'll just put today behind us and go to the next race. We're lucky there are five races left. A lot can happen.
"This championship race won't be won or lost here, I'll tell you that.
"The Camaro left good (on that run) and was running very good early, then it dropped a cylinder on the left side at about 2.5 seconds. When that happens early in the run, the front wheels aren't touching very much. I had the (steering) wheel turned as hard to the right as I could, but the car kept moving toward the centerline. I drove it as far as I could before I finally gave (the throttle) a quick pedal, but it was too late. Tony came roaring by me and I crossed the center line."
WHIT BAZEMORE, TEAM WINSTON CAMARO Z28, advanced to the second round by defeating Bob Weickgenannt, 5.016/298.21 for Whit, 10.320/81.85 for Bob.
Bazemore then defeated his fellow Camaro driver CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, in the second round, on a holeshot advantage (.511 reaction time for Whit, .574 for Chuck). Whit won that round with a 5.033-second elapsed time at 290.69 mph to Chuck's 5.013/293.15. Bazemore will face Dean Skuza in the semifinal.
PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, was eliminated in the first round by Jim Yataes, 6.964/196.89 for Yates, 7.705/140.77 for Morgan. Morgan and Yates were the first pair out.
MORGAN: "I let the clutch out and it started shaking the tires and never let up. It happened right at the top of low gear. The bald spots on the track are so bad, and usually the first pair out have to deal with the worst conditions. It's a bad deal for us. I knew I was in trouble before I started, because I was in the left lane. The Top Fuel and Funny Cars take the rubber up and we put it back down. I didn't have any rubber down ahead of me. Yates told me I'm sorry but I'm taking the right lane, I don't think I can make it down the left lane. I said that's awfully encouraging. But that's what happens when you lose lane choice."
KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, advanced two rounds by first defeating Robert Patrick (6.971/197.19 to 7.033/195.48), then Troy Coughlin on a holeshot (7.026/196.37 to 7.006/195.52 -- Kurt's R/T was .434, Troy's .457). He will face Jeg Coughlin in the semifinal.
