The Answer Is More Horsepower!

RICHFIELD, OH 10/8/01 In less than two weeks Mark Pawuk's Summit Racing Pontiac will once again roll into action, but before that happens engine builder Scott Pastircak and his crew will have their hands full.

"The only thing wrong is that we don't have enough horsepower," admitted Pawuk from his office on Monday morning following a disappointing weekend in Pennsylvania that saw the team fail to qualify for final eliminations.

"I definitely don't think it's a question of our people feeling overconfident," he added. "The team has been working non-stop in an effort to keep building good engines, but it's obvious that we're somehow missing the target. Right now too many other teams have moved ahead of us, and if we're going to salvage anything out of the three remaining races on the schedule, there's only one way to do it. The answer is more horsepower!"

Pawuk's emotional roller coaster season continued in Pennsylvania, when one of his best runs of the season, an 6.861, left him three hundredths of a second short of the bump spot of 6.831 seconds.

"It's plenty tough out there," Pawuk concedes, "but I didn't get into Pro Stock drag racing 13 or 14 years ago because I thought it would be easy. I think the best drivers, tuners and builders in drag racing are in Pro Stock, and I think our team ranks right up there with the best of 'em, but right now we're behind.

"We seem to be okay in the front half of the track, but we lose a lot in the back half. That's evident from our speeds, which definitely aren't what they should be. We only made one run over 200 miles an hour this past weekend, and to us, that's a real indicator where we're struggling.

"There's only one answer, and that's burning a lot of midnight oil between now and the Dallas race in two weeks. Including today we've got about 16 days before the guys have to hit the road for the Motorplex. This is going to be a real test for our team, and there's absolutely no choice about what we've got to do. We've got to pass that test and start running better."
